Learning Unix

In an effort to move out of that “in between” Chris Brogan of Lifehack.org mentioned in a comment on my “Adding that Edge to Life” post, I decided to continue my effort to change things up a bit and learn something new. I have Mac OS X and my friend has always been talking about the power of Unix (the underlying OS of Mac OS X) and how useful it is. In fact I’ve seen hium fool around with the Terminal on my Mac but never understood what was so special about Unix.

In Barnes & Noble the other day I made it my goal to buy a book, an interesting book that would be useful and enlightening. Not a novel. Checked out finance. Nothing that popped out right away. I then went to the computer section to the single Apple shelf. There were plenty of books on things I already knew but then I came across “Learning Unix for Mac OS X Tiger,” by O’Reilly. I thumbed through it and thought this was the book I was looking for.

  • It was something that I knew I would probably be interested in
  • I would learn what my friend was talking about
  • It would give me something to do
  • And, I would learn a new skill

I figured if I ended up not liking it I could resell it online. I’ve already gotten through more than half the book and discovered how interesting it is and things I’m not normally able to do through the Finder of Mac OS X. Though I think the main thing that’s gotten me pumped is that I’m learning something new that I originally was skeptical about liking.
