As we approach Valentine’s Day we see, surprisingly, the number of paid subscribers of online dating services are declining. JupiterReasearch finds only five percent of Internet users pay for these services, down a point from 2005. Dating sites however are making more only by raising fees. And new ploys like adding Dr. Phil to Match.com hasn’t helped much. Alternatives? Social networking sites are used for dating by 14% of those not subscribing to those paid services.Even better? TiVo is hosting a matchmaking event on Monday in San Francisco. They match people based on their TiVo Recommendations and viewing habits. You get two free drinks and have the chance to win a TiVo box and lifetime subscription.

The declining concept of online dating? I’m sure this is not permanent.
