The online storage phenomenon has stayed pretty constant in the last six months, chatterwise. However, it’s certainly expanded
as new startups and services launch.
Xdrive is probably one of the best known storage solutions. But, at $10/month for just 5GB, one can find better. TechCrunch has posted a great piece on many different storage solutions. They reviewed thirteen services which include some new Web 2.0 launches. Take a read of their posting and see what you think. They have a great chart listing all the services and what they offer. For me, price is probably number one. Many have taken it to themselves to use Gmail’s free +2GB to store their files. But, with TechCrunch’s list, I chose Streamload. Why? Because it gives you 25GB free. No strings. No mounted drive though. You can either upload through the web site or via FTP. Streamload also categorizes your files as you upload them! Music is put in your Music Locker, sorted by title, album, or artist. Photos go to their own tab, and so do videos. Quite a good application, but I wish I could use it like a mounted hard drive.
You can expect online storage to grow very rapidly as the demand to store our growing collections of music, photos, and media increases. Those getting in on this business are smart, especially the cutting edge startups that attempt to pave the way for the industry’s future. Keep a look out.
